Fantasy Notes: Raising the Shield(s)
- Scot “panty” Shields has recovered from a tough August in which he gave up four homers to throw shutout ball in nine of his past 10 outings. He’s been slightly more hittable this season, but has compensated for that by posting the finest command (84 Ks/24 BB) of his career. Shields remains one of the most valuable non-closing relievers in baseball.
- Ryan Shealy is currently out battling a case of hives — which, coincidentally came on the night he was supposed to face Johan Santana — but he’s been impressive since arriving in KC from Colorado in a deadline deal. With Mike Sweeney’s future in doubt with the Royals, there could be an opportunity for Shealy to become a full-time player. He’s about to enter his prime power years and I think he has some potential in this area. Between 2004 and 2005, he hit a combined 55 homers in the Rockies’ minor league system.
