Thanks for providing further detail on the money. I think I made it clear how I feel about Edmonds, but I just think he's getting to be a risky play.

As for Colby Rasmus, (I assume that is of who you speak), I agree that he's a serious prospect worth watching. It's about time that the Cards started turning out some good homegrown positional players.

Cheers.

In your analysis of the Edmonds deal, you were wrong on one point, and failed to look at the bigger picture of the deal.

First, Edmonds will get $16 million over the next two years. The remaining $3 million will be spread out from 2010-2019. So that's $8 per season.

Second, Edmonds was sitting on a $3 million buyout of his $10 million option for 2007. Because of that existing obligation, in 2007, the Cards are effectively only paying Edmonds $5 million. Can you get someone with his defensive ability, leadership in the clubhouse, and clutch hitting for $5 on the open market? I doubt it.

Though his 2008 check may be a bit more than I can stomach, it helps to know that the Cards' best prospect currently is a Single-A centerfielder, who they expect to be ready by 2009. With that in mind, maybe it makes sense to keep Edmonds around (albeit at a reduced level of ability) through 2008.
