[...] The two hottest hitters for the Snakes over the past couple of weeks have been Eric Byrnes and Conor Jackson, the top two hitters in the batting order. Byrnes ended the week on a 10-for-21 roll while Jackson’s OPS so far in June is 1049. I’ve always liked Jackson. He was No. 21 on my top 25 prospects list back in 2006.
[...] With Carlos Quentin getting farmed out and Scott Hairston and Jeff Salazar looking like short-term answers at best (although I still believe Hairston could surprise), it may be time for the D-Backs to dip back into their system for the answer. Just like they did when they aggressively promoted Mark Reynolds, could it be time to give Justin Upton a look? The first overall pick in the 2005 draft tore it up at High-A (.341 BA with five homers, six doubles and nine steals in 126 at-bats) before earning a promotion to Double-A. Upton is more than holding his own with 35 RBI in 52 games, and although he’s been having a tougher time on the basepaths, he’s showing patience with 20 walks. This weekend, Upton (prospect No. 23 on our Top 30 list) raised his profile even further by homering for Team USA in the Futures Game. If Arizona’s tailspin continues and it plays itself out of the race, that could expedite Upton’s arrival. [...]

[...] SS Troy Tulowitzki, COL — With the Rockies playing every day from Monday to Sunday next week, Tulowitzki (No. 13 on our top 30 prospects this spring) could be a good shortstop replacement if you need one. He hasn’t been lighting it up stats wise, but he is on a seven-game hitting streak and is batting 12-for-31 (.387 BA), with two HRs, eight RBI, and a triple over this stretch. Don’t drop someone good for him, but if you need a DL replacement, give him a look as he is the Rox starter at short. [...]

[...] In an organization that boasts stud outfield prospects Fernando Martinez (No. 25 on our Top 30 Prospects list) and Lastings Milledge, it’s easy to overlook Mets’ farmhand Carlos Gomez. But here’s a kid already at Triple-A that won’t turn 22 until December, and to say he’s holding his own is an understatement. Gomez has hit safely in all 14 games, batting over .390 with a .436 OBP, and he’s continued his speed demon ways with six thefts. In his previous two seasons, Gomez has swiped 105 bases. The Mets have an embarrassment of riches here as Gomez clearly has supreme top of the order skills, but New York already has the brighest young leadoff hitter in the game in Jose Reyes. If Gomez’s brilliant start doesn’t prompt the Mets to deal Milledge for pitching help, I’m not sure if they ever will. [...]

[...] The lessons of the Ty Howington story are very much relevant today as the Reds find themselves with another top drawer arm in Homer Bailey, the top pitching prospect in the game, in our opinion. Cincy can ill afford to let another glorious opportunity to produce a potential staff ace slip through its hands because of injury, abuse, mismanagement or any other reason. [...]
