Dear RotoRob: Will Soph Slump Strike Braun?

Can Ryan Braun avoid the dreaded sophomore slump?
Do owners need to worry that Ryan Braun will experience a sophomore slump?

Dear RotoRob,

I was wondering your opinion on second-year phenom Ryan Braun. I like his tremendous upside, but do you think the “sophomore slump” may come into play? Our mocks are constantly changing, but I am considering him with my second round pick.

Thanks again.

Dude,

Since Braun is moving to LF, he takes a hit in my keeper rankings, although he will continue to qualify at the hot corner this season at least. He will still hit his bombs and be good, but a power hitting OF isn’t the same as a power hitting 3B. Deciding whether to take him in round two will depend on how many teams your league is, but I have him hitting .320/.375/.650 with 40-45 dingers.

Wow, Rob is generous with his projections. I want Rob to by my secret Santa. I’d go with a more conservative approach and project .280 with 30 HR. Since he has good speed and still qualifies at 3b this year, he’s worth a second round pick. Maybe he turns into Pujols and has a monster second year, but it’s not something I would bank on. Even with a move to the OF, he has good value because OF is pretty thin this year. The flexibiltiy might me nice.

Jeez, Todd, I was just going to send you Tim’s used cast as your gift this year!
