Good point. It also proves that the key to a championship is having the ability to roll over your pitching and key in on temporary trends early. And a key trend -- yes, a temporary one, Todd -- is that Padilla is getting the job done. So grab him, ride him for as long as it lasts, dump him and move on to the next flavour of the week. As Tim says, you get enough flavours of the week on your roster at the right times, and you're gold.

I also think it demonstrates the volatility of pitching in general. Heading into the start of the regular season how many of the following starting pitchers were actually on fantasy rosters? Cliff Lee, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Vicente Padilla, Greg Smith, Todd Wellemeyer, Scott Olsen, and Jair Jurrjens were all free-agents in most formats. Owning even two of these guys probably means you're at, or near the top in the pitching categories in your league.

I think with a guy like Padilla, it's hard to recommend him since we have seen him at his worst and it ain't pretty. But, even with the worst of players, there comes a time where you got to say, "Is this guy for real?" and be willing to pull the trigger or get left out in the cold. It's guys like Padilla that can win you a championship in deep league while guys like Smoltz hit the DL.

[...] RotoRob wrote an interesting post today on Ouvrir LaPortaHere’s a quick excerpt Over the course of the baseball season, there are several very important dates that potentially can make a huge difference for your fantasy baseball team. We are currently heading into the one weekend of the year that probably more than any other will shape and determine our fate and destiny over the balance of 2008. No it’s not a trading deadline, the callup of the newest superstar in waiting, or a short week that requires massive pre-planning to max out those at-bats. It would be Mother’s Day [...]
