Milone works in the mid-to-high 80s with his fastball, has a solid curve, and a great changeup. How then does he manage to strike out a batter per IP? He finds a way to disguise his fastball and adds a cutter. A quick look at his strikeout rates over the past three seasons clearly indicates how successful this addition has been.
2008 -- 7.5
2009 -- 6.3
2010 -- 8.8
2011 -- 9.2

A pitcher with his velocity issues has to have both pin point control and an out pitch and since adding the cutter he has elevated his game rather noticeably.

I've always been one to root for the underdog and it will be interesting to see if he can sustain his current level of success at the big league level should the opportunity present itself. Either way one has to take their hat off to the kid for persevering against some serious odds in his quest to be a big league pitcher.

My thanks as always for the comment, Rich -- greatly appreciated!

It'll be interesting to see how Milone's 85 MPH fastball plays in the majors. It doesn't have incredible sink so a Brandon Webb type pitcher is unlikely. The changeup is nice but comes in at 75 MPH. I'm not sure he's a prospect, but you never know...

Great article as always.
