Further information about the search functionality from Peter:

“Just wanted to let you know that I received confirmation that there is a bug in the search function of the software and it had to be removed to keep machines from crashing.

Very unfortunate, and apparently not fixable at this point, but it will be fixed in time for the Football issue come July. And onward after that.”

So we apologize for the technological glitch, but you can rest assured this will be ironed out going forward.

@Jamie: Sorry for the delay, but have an answer from RotoMan about that now:

“I’m sorry to hear about your problems with the digital Guide. I have to say that I was so excited we could finally get it to folks who couldn’t find it in stores that I just assumed that it would be searchable. In fact, I’m sure there was a search function, because I realized how easy it would be to track our language usage in the digital version.

There doesn’t seem to be a search function now, and I don’t know the reason why, but I’m sure it was because of some issues on certain machines that were crashing. I will find out the details as soon as possible.

I appreciate the feedback and am sorry if we come up short this time.

I love the magazine and usually hunt it down every year. This year I was lazy and got the digital copy, but I’m pretty disappointed in it. It would probably be great if I had a tablet, but trying to navingate the digital version with a mouse is clunky and difficult. There is absolutely NO way I can use this as a reference during my draft tomorrow. It would take me so long to find anything that my pick would be past before I ever looked anything up.

So I guess it was a good idea to have a digital copy, but I find it next to useless as a during-the-draft reference, which is how I always use it. Disappointing.

Hi Andy,

All good questions. In the Guide to the Guide, on page 5, I write: The Big Price is Rotoman’s estimate of what a player is going to be worth bidding for in a single-league non-keeper league in the spring. While the Big Price reflects some of the optimism or pessimism of the projection, it is more of a read of market forces and history, and an estimate of which side of them Rotoman thinks you want to be on.

There is lots more there about how the bid prices are adjusted, how they add up to the amount that will be spent, and how they are a preliminary guess and how an updated list of projections and prices will be posted (as it was last Friday) at blog.askrotoman.com.

It just so happens that in the update that Axford is 16 and Bailey 14, and Hellickson and Holland are both 14.

I’ve written a lot about why it’s a mistake to base your prices on your projections, but I do develop both at once and by now they are better aligned than they were in January. The magazine is a handy Guide, but it is the first word in the process of evaluation, which goes on all season long.

I bought the magazine and am somewhat confused on how the writers justify their bid prices. Are the prices what you would bid based on predicted performance? If so then it appears no thought was put into them at all. For example, look at Jeremy Hellickson(pg. 117) and Derek Holland(pg. 118). Hellickson is a $19 bid price with projections of 13-11, 4.44 era, 126k, and 1.44 WHIP. Holland is a $9 bid with projections of 13-11, 4.07 era, 159k, and a 1.33 WHIP. Why would I pay double for Hellickson when you predict Holland to have better stats in every cat? Also, look at Axford ($14) and A. Bailey($16). No way am I paying $2 more for injury-plagued Bailey. Look at the predictions – Ax at 5-2, 2.58 era, 38svs, 90k, 1.22 WHIP and Bailey at 2-2, 2.86 era, 29 svs, 43k, and a 1.21 WHIP. How do more projected wins, better ERA, 10 more saves, 2x as many ks and an almost equal WHIP mean Ax is worth $2 less than Bailey? Cueto is listed at $17 and Johan Santana is $8 yet the predictions have Santana better in 2 cats (ERA and WHIP) and nearly identical in wins and ks. How is Cueto worth double Santana when Santana is projected to be the better pitcher?

Oh, and more information about that site. If you bought the hard copy, you can register at the online site and get access to the online version for free by requesting it. You’ll be asked a question to prove you have the hard copy, and then you’re in. It won’t be updated info, but it will be available anywhere you can get online, so that can be handy.
