MLB Today: Health has Been Huge for Rangers’ Rotation

March 13, 2012 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
Andy Oliver has a good chance to be the fifth starter for the Detroit Tigers.
Andy Oliver is making his claim on a rotation spot in Detroit.

Remember when Nolan Ryan took a larger role with the Rangers a few years back? His main goal at the time was to build a more durable pitching staff.

Mission accomplished.

The team’s Opening Day rotation from 2011 wound up making 157 starts with the other five games being started by Dave Bush (three) and Scott Feldman (two). None of the front five spent any time on the DL last year.

How rare is that in this day and age? Kudos to Ryan for having a plan and achieving it.

Quick Hits

  • It’s a damn good thing the Cards are getting Adam Wainwright back this season because things don’t sound so hot for veteran Chris Carpenter. The soon-to-be-37-year-old has a bulging disk in his neck and has yet to appear in a game after having his scheduled appearance Monday shelved. If Carpenter has to begin the season on the DL, Lance Lynn could earn his rotation spot, or it might go to promising prospect Shelby Miller, the latter of whom I expect to make an impact at some point this season regardless.
  • Mike Trout, who has been dogged this spring by a flu bug that cost him 10 pounds, could be ready for game action shortly. He’s mostly recovered from the weight loss and is expected to get into a game by Monday. Unfortunately, there’s still no clear path for playing time in the bigs for the Angels’ top prospect. This team really needs to clear some space for Trout, who as things stand, is ticketed for Triple-A. Of course, finding a taker for Bobby Abreu won’t be easy.
  • Andy Oliver tossed four innings of one-hit ball Monday and he’s suddenly vaulted into the lead in the competition to be Detroit’s fifth starter. There are four or five hurlers in the running here, and with pre-season favourite Jacob Turner struggling with his control, the door is opened. Drew Smyly, Duane Below, Casey Crosby and Adam Wilk are also in the mix, but none of them have distinguished themselves as much as Oliver.
