2012-13 Golden State Warriors Preview

Andrew Bogut can help the Golden State Warriors improve defensively.
After watching most of last season from the stands, Andrew Bogut will finally don his Warrior jersey.

After showing some modest improvement in 2010-11, the Golden State Warriors plummeted back to the depths last season, finishing 20 games under .500 in a season that was 16 games shorter because of the lockout. Yikes.

While the Warriors’ offense was pretty good last season (driven by Monta Ellis before he was dealt to Milwaukee), only Sacramento had a more pourous D. Golden State was very good at sharing the rock, but rebounding was a major weakness. The end result was a fifth straight playoff-less season.

Today, we’re going to look at a few Warrior-related storylines we’re following:

  • Despite the threat of a lawsuit from area residents, a $5.4-million Santa Cruz facility for the Golden State Wariors’ D-League team has been green lighted. Santa Cruz City Council unanimously approved the building permits for the facility, however, funding (which includes a $4 million loan from the city) for the venue still needs to be voted on. That vote might not be as much of a slam dunk considering that Beach Hill residents want to block the arena and have threatened a lawsuit to do so. Traffic, noise and environmental impacts are the main issues the residents have with this. Apparently, a full environmental review was not done, and that could be enough to force an injunction on construction. Some reports suggest construction had already begun, but that seems a bit bizarre considering the building permits just came through.
  • On the injury front, the team expects Andrew Bogut (ankle surgery) to be ready for opening night, although he might see limited action in the preseason. Don’t look for him in the preseason opener on October 7, but when the games count, the big man should be good to go. It’s really hard to envision Bogut staying healthy for a full season considering the only time he did so was as a rookie. Only one other time in his career has he managed to play as many as 70 games. As always, Bogut will be a great Fantasy sleeper if he can play 70 to 75 games, but just how lucky do you feel? The other factor here is seeing how he’ll share the glass with David Lee. This is the first time the Warriors have had two legitimate bigs in many, many years, so it will be fascinating to see how this plays out.
  • Speaking of Bogut, we know how much he’ll improve the Warriors’ ugly defence. But will he get any help? This team has a long way to go to merely become mediocre under its own basket.
  • Dorell Wright has been dealt to the Sixers, opening the door for rookie Harrison Barnes to snare the starting SF job. With just Richard Jefferson, Carl Landry and fellow freshman Draymond Green standing in his way, we like Barnes’ chances of being an extremely Fantasy-worthy rookie. Of course, Landry will mostly see time at the four, playing behind Lee, so that leaves an even clearer path to PT for Barnes.
  • Assuming Klay Thompson is the starting two-guard, how will he fare with a backcourt mate (Stephen Curry) that he’s never started with? It’s the same dynamic in the frontcourt that we mentioned earlier with Bogut and Lee. The Warriors are going to have a lot of players that are unfamiliar with each other. That might not be a bad thing in time, because it was clear over time that it wasn’t easy for Ellis and Curry to both excel when they played together.
  • Speaking of Curry, is he finally over his ankle woes? Landing Jarrett Jack in the Wright trade could prove to be a very important move considering the revolving door of PGs the Warriors used when Curry missed most of last campaign.
