Alex Rodriguez’s Tumble

October 23, 2012 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
Wade Davis pitched very well for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Will Wade Davis get a chance to start or is he ticketed for a set-up role?

How bizarre was it to see Alex Rodriguez get benched in the final two games of the ALCS against the Tigers?

It’s really been a free fall for A-Rod since 2008, hasn’t it been?

The broken hand that cost him over a month this season really screwed up his campaign. In the final 28 games of the regular season, Rodriguez managed all of six extra-base hits including just two freaking homers.

Power outage city, baby!

The Yankees have now been eliminated by their new kryptonite, Detroit, three times in the past six years, and A-Rod’s playoff disappearing act is a big reason why.

Other than 2009, Rodriguez has been a notorious dud in the postseason, and this season was no different. He hit .120 without an extra-base hit, scored just once and failed to drive in a run while whiffing a dozen times in seven games. Blick!

A-Roid’s .111 showing vs. Detroit forced Manager Joe Girardi to actually bench A-Rod for Games Three and Four. Ballsy city, baby!

After that shocking development, the rumours that the Yankees would like to divest themselves of Rodriguez started en masse. There’s no doubt New York will listen this winter, but will a realistic trade scenario emerge?

This will be just one of several fascinating storylines to follow in New York this offseason in the wake of another Yankee playoff failure.

Quick Hits

  • Back in a late-July Podcast, we talked about how Tim Lincecum could be the game’s most important player in the second half. Well, he was clearly a vastly better pitcher after the break, shaving over 2.5 runs from his ERA and significantly improving his hit rates. No, Lincecum is not all the way back, but the Giants are going to desperately need him to continue to pitch well in the World Series, either as the Game Two starter or as a bullpen option until later in the series.
  • Heading into the season, we ranked Wade Davis just outside the top 100 among starting pitchers. Well, he didn’t wind up making a single start for the Rays this year, but based on his performance out of the pen, he would have been well inside the top 100. Even though he still feels he should be in the rotation, Davis was extremely effective in a long relief role, doing a superb job of keeping the ball in the yard. He’s signed through 2014 (and not at bargain basement prices), so the Rays are likely to step up his responsibility next season. Look for Davis to evolve into a top set-up man, a role that will increase his Fantasy value.
