RotoRob Interviews Curtis Joseph

May 20, 2014 | By Chris Wassel | comment on this post
Former NHL goaltender great Curtis Joseph talked with RotoRob.com.
Curtis Joseph faced a barrage of our questions.

Interviews are always fun, as you never quite knows what to expect. However, when you combine a cause like “Stay in the Play” and former goaltender great Curtis Joseph, then you should expect fireworks.

This interview featured fireworks of a different kind, but it was clear that CuJo still has that itch or desire — whether it is coaching or a similar position. The man loves hockey. After all, Joseph won 454 games in the NHL and broke the hearts of fans of many top seeds in the playoffs.

For those that do not know, Stay in the Play is an organizational effort in the Toronto area sponsored by Voltaren Emulgel. Think of the product as an odorless version of Biofreeze with a little more strength.

Yes, the pickup game will be an honour to be in but Stay in the Play is more than this one game. It is a campaign to raise awareness to know your physical limits and to better understand one’s body. The vast majority of weekend warriors are not in the same shape as athletes or even most former athletes. There is a machismo that often takes over that keeps people from admitting that maybe they need to learn their body a little better before getting in the game. After all, if you overdo it, how do you expect to stay in the game?

It really is a good question. The key is always to know your body. Thanks to Curtis Joseph, Trevor Linden and Voltaren Emulgel, there will be one amazing experience on June 19.

What do you have to do? Go to the Stay in the Play website (see link above), fill in your email address, then click go. You have a chance, with a friend, to skate in drills, skate with the pros, and be coached by two former NHL greats. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience. For more details, check out the video below.

It is always a privilege to pick the brain of a professional athlete. There is that unique insight and perspective that is prevalent. Also in those rare cases, a candor exists that is quite refreshing.

Then there was the twist of all twists. Early on in the interview it was fun to see Joseph ask us a few questions. It was kind of funny to transcribe part of the interview and realize the first five minutes or so was an enjoyable change.

Now we had some fun at first and delved into the Fantasy hockey question. CuJo does not play Fantasy hockey. However, he does play Fantasy baseball and will not stop talking about it. There’s certainly nothing wrong with it and it was fun to hear how him and his sons play actively to the point where they were literally talking about waiver wire pickups minutes before the interview.

Among the topics we covered:

  • How would Joseph improve the Leafs if he was the GM?
  • Scouting tips about up and comers he heard back in the day.
  • He tells us about the Stay in the Game initiative and the pickup game.
