Follow along all season as Josh Johnson plays RotoDerby — a new twist on Fantasy baseball — and checks in with monthly strategy updates. For a complete explanation of how RotoDerby works, see our article here.

Team One: The Good Eyes

Lineup

  • Hanley Ramirez, IF, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Ian Kinsler, IF, Detroit Tigers
  • Edwin Encarnacion, IF, Toronto Blue Jays
  • Buster Posey, IF, San Francisco Giants
  • Pablo Sandoval, IF, San Francisco Giants
  • Adrian Beltre, IF, Texas Rangers
  • Jose Bautista, OF, Toronto Blue Jays
  • Matt Holliday, OF, St. Louis Cardinals
  • Bryce Harper, OF, Washington Nationals
  • Coco Crisp, OF, Oakland Athletics

Strategy: The plan was simple. Find guys that struck out less than 100 times last season. We cheated with Harper because he only played in 118 games in 2013. This season, however, Harper outdid himself by striking out 104 times in just 99 games.

What worked: For one glorious month Encarnacion was RotoDerby gold. Beltre waxed his nostalgic consistent self after an April injury. Bautista was a rock worth cloning, but a four-point June hurt his monthly average. Holliday in the second half was pretty nice.

What didn’t: Harper, who may be worth a gamble next season, was a whipping boy for many frustrated owners.

Bottom line: We finished as the 30th best team.

The Peakers

Lineup

  • Anthony Rizzo, IF, Chicago Cubs
  • Freddie Freeman, IF, Atlanta Braves
  • Jedd Gyorko, IF, San Diego Padres
  • Todd Frazier, IF, Cincinnati Reds
  • Carlos Santana, IF, Cleveland Indians
  • Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies
  • Yasiel Puig, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
  • Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami Marlins
  • Bryce Harper, OF, Washington Nationals
  • Will Venable, OF, San Diego Padres

Strategy: We assembled this team with one word in mind: “breakout.” We knew some of these cats were risky plays and Tulowitzki was sure exciting for his usual half season. We also now believe potential is a cruel succubus and we would like to thank Mr. Gyorko for that.

What worked: Big power bats like Stanton and Rizzo produced fairly positive numbers considering their strikeout ratios were 26.7 per cent and 18.8 per cent, respectively. Rizzo was our most consistent month-to-month performer. Frazier and Santana certainly pulled their weight while Puig was ironically very Jekyll and Hyde.

What didn’t: With an outfield of Puig, Stanton and Harper, we needed a true number four to form a fierce squadron of alley sliders. Venable was our kryptonite. Note to self: don’t use more than zero Padres next season. You read that right. Also, the usually steady Freeman took a drastic step back after a solid opening month.

Bottom line: We finished in 487th place.
