The basic concept of Survive is this: how could Konami take The Phantom Pain and make a Resident Evil game out of it? That’s essentially what is attempted, with some decent results. This is selling the Metal Gear brand, though, and that means a ridiculous attempt to connect the happenings in Dite to the main storyline.

While Bane, Freeze and Gordon get some time here, they’re really pushed to the side as two primary conflicts unfold. Selina and Bruce navigate their feelings for each other while striking a balance between their differing moralities. John and Bruce hit a strange mentor/apprentice relationship as John tries to woo Harley but also understand what it means to do the right thing.

This episode, which feels shorter in length and faster in pace than the previous episodes, portrays Rachel’s final moments — and Chloe’s narrative which parallels it — as the life of a smart but troubled teen girl. The problem with this is that as the proverbial Laura Palmer of the series, there’s a gap between who you see in Before the Storm and her destiny in the original series.

Fractured Mask picks up immediately where the previous one left off, which means that Harley Quinn is leading the gang, John Doe is still an endearing not-quite-Joker, Catwoman has returned to give Bruce all sorts of feels. Oh, and there’s a frozen carcass of the Riddler.

The campaign starts out during Return of the Jedi, and veers off from there. Most levels play like a Star Wars-themed FPS, similar to Dark Forces from the 1990s. Half the time, it’s an immersive-but-short campaign, but the other half, the level design leaves a lot to be desired

The final episode, Don’t Stop Believin’, streamlines some of the series’ problems for a tighter narrative. That means the explore-and-solve segments that bogged down previous episodes have been cut for a focus on story and character.

Simply put, Origins is a gorgeous game. It pushes the limits of this generation’s graphical fidelity despite the considerably vast landscape of Ancient Egypt. Lighting, water, character models, and more are all exquisite, and the draw distances are strikingly impressive, especially when flying around using Bayek’s eagle. Similarly, the animation has improved to smoother levels.
