Fantasy Notes: Manny’s Streak Ends

August 14, 2006 | By RotoRob | comment on this post
  • Manny Ramirez’s batting streak, among the quietest you’ll ever see thanks to Chase Utley, ended yesterday at a career-best 27 games. He was robbed of base hits twice — once by a diving Miguel Tejada and a second time when he hit a grounder to pitcher Todd Williams who threw wildly to first for an error. Had Manny not been being Manny (and thereby not exactly hustling to first), he might have been credited with a single as the scorer may have ruled that he would have beat the throw.
  • After suffering through a rough second half last year, Oriole second baseman Brian Roberts appears he will avoid a let down this season. He’s on a modest four-game hit streak, but the past three are all multiple-hit efforts, making him 8 for his past 18, getting his BA back close to the .300 mark. While Roberts isn’t producing at the level he did last year, he has driven in five over the past three games and I love what I see out of him this year in terms of plate discipline. He’s got more walks than strikeouts at this point, something Roberts has never achieved before.
  • Jon Lester finally won, his first in five starts (improving to 6-2), but he still looks very shaky, giving up nine hits, four earned runs a pair of walks in five innings. In fact, since his brilliant eight-inning, one-hit shutout almost a month ago, Lester has been a poor play. He’s getting dropped in mixed leagues and is even falling off the radar in some very shallow AL leagues.
  • If you’re in a league allowing daily moves, do not start Jake Westbrook tomorrow night in Minnesota. His road work (4-4, 6.25) suggests he should only be used at home (5-3, 2.49). Westbrook is one of the most extreme Jeckyl/Hyde acts around.
  • Vicente Padilla is 6-2 since June 30 and has lowered his ERA over a third of a run to under 4.15. This month, he’s 2-0, with a sub-2.00 ERA. For some reason, Padilla is unowned in about two-thirds of combined leagues and I really can’t figure out why. If your league is one of those, take another look at him.
