MLB Today: Melky Cabrera Keeps Producing

June 27, 2011 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on MLB Today: Melky Cabrera Keeps Producing
Melky Cabrera is having a nice season for the Kansas City Royals.
Melky Cabrera as a must-own player? Strange but true.

Right from the start of the season, Melky Cabrera surprised us. His one and only season in Atlanta last year was an unmitigated disaster, but he sure has looked good since returning to the American League this season – especially from a power perspective.

Hell, he’s nearly on pace for a 20-homer/20-steal season, and those don’t grow on trees, so Cabrera has become a must-own Fantasy asset since donning a Royal uniform. Who the hell saw this one coming? This is the same player that had just four homers and 42 RBI in 458 at-bats for the Braves last year, right?

As part of Manager Ned Yost’s most recent tinkering, in the past few games Cabrera has taken over the lead-off spot in the Kansas City lineup, which should help his runs total (he scored one run off two singles on Sunday).

Cabrera is hitting with more power than ever, he’s stealing bases more frequently, his BA is up and he’s even making defensive gems and throwing baserunners out (he’s second in assists among centre fielders).

For KC, the timing couldn’t be better for Cabrera’s bounce back season. This organization is in the midst of seeding the big league club with more young talent than it’s ever seen, so Cabrera makes a prime trade chip. Don’t think for a minute that the Royals won’t try to capitalize.

Quick Hits

  • After putting up a Golden Sombrero Sunday, Adam Dunn has now fanned 16 times in his last six games, 31 times in 63 at-bats this month and an even 100 times in 231 at-bats for the season. Who takes the cake between Dunn and Dan Uggla as the impact acquisition gone most awry?
  • Take another look at Jorge Posada in your AL-only league. He’s recorded extra-base hits in back-to-back games and is quietly batting .393 in June.
  • After Jo-Jo Reyes ended his nightmare losing skid, he actually won three times in four starts, but on Wednesday he got rocked by his old team, the Braves, and continues to serve up dingers like McDonald’s dishes out Happy Meals. After back-to-back starts in which he’s yielded a pair of homers, Reyes has now been shellacked for 10 long bombs in 15 starts and 85 IP for the season. Improved command aside, there aren’t a ton of positives to take out of his 2011 season so far.
  • One-time Marlin farmhand Angel Molina (the Jays’ 27th round pick in 1999), who never advanced beyond Double-A, is now in his fourth of Independent League ball, batting .296 with 20 runs and 16 RBI through the first 30 games for the Pittsfield Colonials of the CanAm League.
  • Jimmy Rollins exploded on Sunday, going 4-for-4 with two runs and a double. Monday, he’ll attempt to hit a home run farther than Babe Ruth’s record 575-foot blast, and he’ll use an aluminum bat to do so. J-Roll is trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records with the feat.
  • Dodger outfield prospect James Baldwin is off to a scary good start at the Rookie-level Pioneer League. He was 2-for-5 with two runs, a homer and a double Sunday to actually drop his BA to .433 through seven games with 12 runs, two doubles, a triple, three homers, 12 RBI and five steals. Keeper league owners need to watch this 19-year-old closely.

The East Carolina senior led the Pirates in batting average, hits, doubles, RBI, total bases and slugging, while finishing second in home runs. The A’s, as they are wont to do, plucked the college kid in the 21st round in last month’s entry draft.
