The Wire Troll: Bismack Biyombo Waving the Finger in Orlando

Welcome back to another week of Fantasy basketball action.

This week, the Cavs set an NBA record with two straight games of 20 treys; Kevin Love set an NBA record for most points scored (34) in a first quarter; and Zack La”Vine-d” a video doing a 360-dunk from the free throw line (see what we did there?).

Things are warming up in the NBA, so let’s warm up that roster bench with some hot waiver picks this week shall we?

GUARDS

Jerryd Bayless, PG, Philadelphia 76ers (ESPN: 7.6 per cent; CBS: 50 per cent): Bayless has taken over as the starting point guard for the 76ers, following up Wednesday’s 18-point showing with another double-digit scoring performance with a trey nailed in each of the last two. In his first start of the season Friday, he didn’t exactly turn the Philly offense around (the team shot under 40 per cent), but he’s going to have the keys to the attack for the time being. Bayless may need some time to get used to his new role, but picking him up now could prove very prudent. We think he’ll be absolutely fine as long as he keeps Jeremy Lin’s crazy-ass hair out of his mouth (see video below).

Patty Mills, PG, San Antonio Spurs (ESPN: 13.4 per cent; CBS: 28 per cent): Mills is mostly coming off the bench, so his minutes tend to fluctuate, but he’s recently been seeing enough action to put up Fantasy-worthy numbers, including Friday’s 19-point explosion that featured two treys and a steal. This diminutive Australian nearly led his country to its first ever basketball medal in the Olympics in the summer, ranking second in the tourney with 21.3 PPG, so you know he’s capable of carrying an offense when needed.

FORWARDS

John Henson, PF, Milwaukee Bucks (ESPN: 2 per cent; CBS: 21 per cent): If Henson could just see some more minutes, maybe he would make a better name for himself other than simply being a limited playing timed block specialist. But until there’s more room in the crowded Bucks’ frontcourt, look at Henson strictly for a boost in blocks.

Trey Lyles, PF, Utah Jazz (ESPN: 7.5 per cent; CBS: 36 per cent): Anytime a player gets a double-double, that automatically puts them on the waiver radar. Lyles notched one in points and rebounds on Friday against Atlanta to go along with two assists. With Derrick Favors (knee) out, Lyles only has one player to compete with for the starting gig and lion’s share of the PT — aging veteran Boris Diaw. But hey, it’s better than having two people to compete against.

CENTRES

Frank Kaminsky III, C/PF, Charlotte Hornets (ESPN: 15.3 per cent; CBS: 45 per cent): You just can’t overlook a centre that can shoot the three-pointer. You know their main role is to grab boards, and make the occasional garbage bucket. Anything else is a bonus. And Kaminski is that bonus for your deep league roster. As in pick him up right now if need boards and three-pointers.

Bismack Biyombo, Orlando Magic (ESPN: 18.9 per cent; CBS: 48 per cent): Obviously, playing behind teammate Nikola Vucevic (who is in the top five in rebounding) it’s going to be hard for Biyombo to show why he’s worth $72 million. But we know Biyombo can be a monster on the boards when given the minutes, and even toss in the occasional Dikembe Mutombo finger wag. Biyombo may not be starting, but give him a look anyways if you need a centre that can help you in boards and blocks.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below who your favourite Fantasy basketball waiver wire pick of the week is.

The Hidden Truth: FG Percentage, Part II

February 18, 2009 | by Alex Hardin | Comments Comments Off on The Hidden Truth: FG Percentage, Part II
Paul Millsap has been a fantasy saviour with Carlos Boozer out. Unfortunately, Boozer is nearly set to return. Welcome to the Part Two of the Hidden Truth: FG Percentage, where today we take a look at FG percentage at the forward position. Thanks to some “helpful” advice, these rankings, unlike those for the guards, incorporate […]
