The Wire Troll: Sam Reinhart Tips the Sabres’ Sword

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Wire Troll. We’ve got the hottest Fantasy hockey waiver wire picks for you, including a goaltender that you might dare say is actually thriving in Alberta! First, we head to Buffalo, the home of the 2018 U-20 World Junior Hockey Championships. You may have heard about a few of the club’s promising young talents, and we’re here to tell you about one that should be getting more attention than he’s currently receiving.

Sam Reinhart, C/RW, Buffalo Sabres (ESPN: 0.6 per cent; CBS: 33 per cent): The youngster getting the lion’s share of attention in Buffalo would no doubt be 2015 second overall pick and 2015 Hobey Baker award winner Jack Eichel, but Reinhart — the Sabres’ 2014 second overall pick — is picking things up, too. In 26 games played, Reinhart has seven goals (check out the video below to witness the mad skills he shows on his most recent goal), 10 points, a plus-2 rating and four penalty minutes, but has been particularly good recently with three goals (one on the power play), a plus-3 rating, 10 shots on goal and two blocks in three games last week. Eichel may be the face of the franchise, but Reinhart is no slouch, either.

We believe Buffalo head coach Dan Bylsma has coached two other elite centres on one team before. While not quite the calibre of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, these two won’t be far off if they can reach their sky high potential.

Sean Couturier, C, Philadelphia Flyers (ESPN: 7.8 per cent; CBS: 14 per cent): “Coots” is one of the league’s hottest players over the last week, scoring two goals and four points with a plus-5 rating, two penalty minutes, eight shots on goal, a hit and four blocked shots. Philly is 6-2-2 in its past 10 games, but still three points out of a playoff spot in the East if the postseason started today. Still, even if the team continues to inexplicably struggle to beat crap teams in its own building, Flyers fans, players and coaching staff now have something to feel good about, and Fantasy GMs should, too.

Patrik Elias, LW, New Jersey Devils (ESPN: 2.1 per cent; CBS: 9 per cent): In six games since returning from injury, New Jersey’s aging vet has one goal, four points, a plus-1 rating and four penalty minutes. You might want to consider jumping on him now before the other GMs in your league get the same idea.

John Moore, D, New Jersey Devils (ESPN: 3 per cent; CBS: 4 per cent): Speaking of the Devils (see what we did there?), Moore is on fire recently with a goal and four points in as many games. He’s added seven shots on goal, nine hits and four blocks in that span. Will his point-per-game pace continue? Heavens no. But ride him while he’s hot.

Anders Nilsson, G, Edmonton Oilers (ESPN: 15.1 per cent; CBS: 29 per cent): Edmonton may be third to last in the league, but don’t tell its goalie that. Nilsson has a 7-7-1 record, a 2.52 goals against average and a very nice .921 save percentage this season, recording three wins, a 1.69 goals against average and a .953 save percentage as the league’s hottest goaltender of the week in his past four appearances. It’s highly unlikely the Oilers will make the postseason, but things are definitely looking up in Edmonton these days.

Fantasy Tip of the Week: With goaltender Carey Price out six weeks with yet another injury, the Montreal Canadiens are riding rookie Mike Condon. We suggest you do, too. For more on Price and the others skating injured around the league, check out RotoRob.com’s latest Hockey Hospital segment.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below which Fantasy waiver wire picks were steals for your team last week.

Ice Chips: Vegas, Baby!

February 20, 2009 | by Mike Chen | Comments (1)
Just ask Daniel Alfredsson (left), who’s having a jaw-droppingly crappy week, if whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. It’s been a rough spell for Daniel Alfredsson, as first photos of him wearing a pink dress in Las Vegas find their way onto the inter-tubes, then his jaw goes boom. However, his Sens are still […]
