Please note that since each episode of Hitman features the same graphics engine and control setup, those elements will not be repeated in our reviews for the remaining episodes. To read our thoughts on that, refer to our review of Episode 1: Paris.

After gallivanting all across the globe, Agent 47 is finally ready to do some work stateside behind enemy lines in Episode 5: Colorado. While some may bemoan the lack of layers to this level — the entire thing is pretty much one big compound so you won’t be blending in with tourists or posing as the delivery guy — it feels like a legitimately different setup than the first four, and that’s a good thing.

Speaking of four, 47’s latest assignment requires him to close four accounts, double what we’ve seen in most episodes. At the top of the list is Sean Rose, believed to potentially be the “shadow client” behind this whole operation, along with a trio of lieutenants: Maya Parvati, a combat instructor, Penelope Graves, ex-Interpol operative, and interrogation specialist Ezra Berg.

Before going any further, let us just point out that this mission requires the use of artistic license far more than most. Given that everyone here is part of a fringe militia, it seems pretty unlikely that they’d return to business as usual despite their leaders dying, regardless of circumstance. When targets were separated it seemed plausible that they were unaware of what was happening elsewhere, but here it feels too convenient.

Logic gaps aside, Colorado proves to be the most challenging mission to date. Yes, many of the basic concepts still apply, like “disguise A” is needed to reach “location B,” but nearly everyone here is heavily armed, and it’s not as easy to go unseen. Plus, having to eliminate four people means you’ll be lurking around more looking for openings to put them in the ground.

Those openings can be hard to find and harder still to exploit, which can lead to some frustration when things don’t break your way. Frequent saving is a good idea here because if things do go south it’s not as easy as simply slipping a couple of guards. A wrong move can bring the whole camp down on you in short order, and there’s no way you’ll win in open combat in this setting.

Even after successfully eliminating all four targets, your work isn’t done. You’ll still need to infiltrate a situation room, which ends up being the most story-heavy section we’ve seen. A lot of the behind-the-scenes wheelings and dealings are brought to light, setting things in motion for the upcoming finale.

OVERALL (4/5)

Episode 5: Colorado may not be as visually interesting as previous locales, but its zealot-filled setting and multitude of targets makes it one of the most compelling.
