The Wire Troll: Marcel Goc Over Ankle Woes

March 3, 2013 | by Chris Wassel | Comments Comments Off on The Wire Troll: Marcel Goc Over Ankle Woes
Marcel Goc is heating up for the Florida Panthers.
Marcel Goc is on fire with five points in the last three games.

You hear the declaration that someone is a Fantasy expert but what does it really mean? This is never an easy process and no one is right all the time. There is no such thing as perfection. When a Fantasy owner is looking for value this time of year, it gets tough. Sometimes, there are gems at the smallest fractions of ownership. The goal this weekend is to find three players with an ownership of 1 per cent or less as players we would classify as “deep finds in the rough.”

When you head into rankings like ESPN, Yahoo, or even say Fantrax, the back pages seem to be filled with the downtrodden and — worse — unplayable talent. Then there are the guys floating between the AHL and NHL that may just get that one shot. Sometimes those players break out unexpectedly and, granted, we may not get these right all the time but the goal is to make a valiant effort at finding these guys that will help when all else fails.

It is now time to reveal our choices. Forgive the conciseness of this week’s post but we figured quality over quantity was a prudent thing as we take The Wire Troll in different directions occasionally.

Marcel Goc, C, Florida Panthers: Two multiple-point games in the last week got us thinking that maybe Goc was finally over the ankle injury that had dogged him in the early part of the season. Currently he has just seven points in 15 contests this season but five of those have come in the past three. And with Goc’s ownership under 1 per cent and desperate Fantasy owners in need, he may just be that guy for a team dying for a little production with minimal risk. Please remember that these pickups are the lowest of the low as far as a gamble. One can dump them just as fast as claim them without worry.

Mark Letestu, C, Columbus Blue Jackets: There is something to be said for a guy who has 11 points in 19 games and yet is owned in less than one quarter of one per cent of Yahoo leagues. Letestu always had the talent to contribute offensively like he did in Pittsburgh, but unfortunately his defensive abilities were not always the greatest. He has a simple role in Columbus playing around 15 minutes a game, which is decent. Letestu averages almost two shots a game and with the current injuries in Columbus (Derick Brassard could miss a week a half with an upper body injury), the ATOI should increase along with the opportunities. There are worse choices that could be on your team at this juncture. Take a gamble, it cannot hurt!

Nick Foligno, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets: Holy crap! We have two players from Columbus on this list? Yes we do. Here is another player who will benefit from all the injuries (i.e., Brandon Dubinsky remains out as well) and see a bit more power play time. Foligno hits people, has nine points on the season, and has a knack for being near the net. His tough style endears him to Fantasy owners looking for hits and physicality. The assists are a bit of a bonus this year and he has been a bit unlucky on the goal scoring front (just two goals on 29 shots). Someone has to score in Columbus and given that Foligno is only owned in 0.1% of all ESPN leagues, he could be worth a look.

Next week we will climb up the ladder and completely focus on defencemen. It will be a fun little ride. As always you can follow me on Twitter @ChrisWasselTHW. Just fire away with those questions and thanks for reading.
