Fantasy Notes: Juan Gone?

Juan Uribe is currently hurt for the Chicago White Sox.

In today’s Fantasy baseball notes, we cover some tension on the Pale Hose and Randy Johnson‘s rebound effort.

  • ChiSox shortstop Juan Uribe has missed the past five games with back woes and his manager, Ozzie Guillen, is obviously frustrated. Clearly, that sensitivity training is working wonders. Uribe suggested he might be ready to return to the lineup on Thursday. Guillen, when told of this, said: “Good for him. I don’t know and I don’t care.” Nice. But there’s more: “There’s one thing about this game that people want you, but they don’t need you. Someone else will replace you. I’m not saying he’s faking an injury or anything, but I thought it was something simple or normal. All of a sudden it’s been a couple of days.” Great support from your manager, Juan. RotoRob has already tackled the topic of how to interpret Guillen’s ramblings. Meanwhile, Alex Cintron starts at short for the ChiSox, but he’s been ineffective offensively in Uribe’s stead. Even so, Guillen has suggested that Uribe may not get the job back immediately even when’s he ready. But a trip to the DL may be in the offing soon, so perhaps we’ll be spared that Ozzie-inspired drama for another couple of weeks.
  • Still with the White Sox, Matt Thornton, who’s been pretty solid this year, has been touched up for four hits, three earned runs and two walks in his last two outings covering just two-thirds of an inning. He’s starting to find his way onto the waiver wires in a few AL-only leagues. Still, Thornton has only given up 30 hits in 37 2/3 IP all season long, so he could still be worth a look, especially in leagues that count holds.
  • Randy Johnson pitched a much-needed solid game on Wednesday, no-hitting the White Sox for six innings before getting touched up for a couple of hits in the seventh, when he couldn’t record an out and had to be pulled. Still, that’s a dozen wins on the season for the 15th time in his career and that’s a dozen times in his career now that Johnson has taken a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Coming off back-to-back rough outings in which, amazingly, he didn’t strike out a single batter, Johnson fanned five on Wednesday. What should you expect of the soon-to-be-43-year-old down the stretch? Oh man, you’ve got us there. Johnson has been so inconsistent this year, he’s really hard to figure out. It’s pretty well a roll of the dice each time out.
  • After a dominating first-half performance, Jim Thome hasn’t had a multiple-RBI game since July 15. Of course, what’s hurting him most is a lack of baserunners to drive in. Scott Podsednik‘s OBP over the same stretch has dropped from .359 to .336, while Tad Iguchi — solid in July — has struggled so far this month with an OBP under .300.
  • Ted Lilly recovered from back-to-back substandard outings and his recent neck woes to throw six shutout innings at a hot Twins team on Thursday. After not pitching in eight days, he gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out three to earn his 10th win and square his record at .500, while trimming his ERA to 4.01. Lilly has now reached double-digits in wins four straight years and is enjoying a nice comeback season coming off the heels of his 2005 disaster.
  • Jason Tyner is mired in a 2-for-13 skid. He has value in most AL leagues, but if it’s a smaller league, he should be on the bubble on your squad.

Fantasy Notes: Sanchez Tops the Rocket

July 16, 2006 | by RotoRob | Comments (0)
Sanchez has now bookended shutout efforts against the Yankees (a very big deal) and the Astros (not that big a deal) around a couple of bitch-slappings at the hands of the Red Sox and the Nats. It’s a small sample size, but he isn’t striking out enough batters and not recording enough ground balls to sustain this kind of success. Having said that, he was averaging well over a strikeout per inning at Double-A before Florida yanked this young fish out of the Southern League waters.

Ozzie Shoots his Mouth off…Again

July 2, 2006 | by RotoRob | Comments (0)
That’s a lot of star power missing, and with the exception of Schilling, none of those players deserve to be there, but is Guillen in the least bit apologetic that he played a role in leaving some of those future Hall of Famers out of the party?
