The Wire Troll: Travis Jankowski Could Get More PT for Padres

Welcome back to another week of Fantasy baseball. We’re now into August, leaving us just over eight weeks away for the end of the 2018 season. You need the wire more than ever now, especially in leagues in which the trade deadline has passed.

This week, the Rays’ move to bolster their offense backfired as Tommy Pham broke his foot and will miss a month; the Giants took an even bigger hit, losing Pablo Sandoval (torn hamstring) for the rest of the season; and Pittsburgh’s Jung Ho Kang will have season-ending surgery on his wrist, once again delaying his return to the bigs.

And now, let’s get to this week’s Fantasy baseball waiver wire recommendations…

Travis Jankowski, OF, San Diego Padres (ESPN: 3.2 per cent; CBS: 10 per cent): Wil Myers (foot) dodged a serious injury, but while he’s on the DL, expect Jankowski to see extra PT. Jankowski is quietly enjoying perhaps his best season, and is currently riding a three-game hit streak, with two multi-hit efforts as part of this mini run to jack his BA up 10 points. He was pretty awful last month, but after an injury-plagued 2017, he’s seeing far more action this year despite starting the season at Triple-A. Jankowski, a supplemental first round pick in 2012, remains a nice source of steals and has spent most of the season at the leadoff spot, particularly excelling there early on (see video below).

Tyler Glasnow, RP, Tampa Bay Rays (ESPN: 3.9 per cent; CBS: 17 per cent): Glasnow was packaged up from the Pirates to the Rays in the Chris Archer trade, and now that he’s landed in Tampa Bay, he’s getting a chance to start again. There were many that felt the Rays didn’t get a big enough return here, but we disagree, especially since Glasnow has a chance to be a very special arm (and Austin Meadows is no slouch, either). In Glasnow’s first start for the Rays, he fanned five in three innings, giving up just two hits, including a solo homer. He had pitched exclusively out of the pen in Pittsburgh this year, doing a better job of keeping the ball in the yard, but now that he’s starting again, his value rises significantly.

Austin Gomber, RP, St. Louis Cardinals (ESPN: 1.7 per cent; CBS: 7 per cent): Another reliever that’s getting a chance to start is Gomber, who looked very sharp in a spot start against the Reds a couple of weeks ago. He’ll take the bump again on Saturday in Pittsburgh, and we think he might make for a sneaky DFS value play. The rookie, taken in the fourth round in 2014, has enjoyed superb hit rates with a solid ERA while going undefeated to date. Gomber has a great pitcher’s build (6’5″, 205), which (other than a minor woe last year) has allowed him to stay durable so far in his pro career.

Steve Pearce, OF, Boston Red Sox (ESPN: 5.4 per cent; CBS: 8 per cent): Acquired from the Blue Jays at the end of June, Pearce has seen a lot more action with Boston and has really responded — especially recently. In the last two games alone, he’s pounded four home runs, driven in eight and drawn two walks. Strange but true, Pearce has now played for every single AL East team, so he certainly knows his way around this division. His ability to play both first base and either corner outfield spot makes him a valuable piece for the BoSox. And while Pearce is red hot, he’s a great asset for your AL-only league team.

Tyler O’Neill, OF, St. Louis Cardinals (ESPN: 9.1 per cent; CBS: 29 per cent): Seattle’s third round pick in 2013, O’Neill was traded to the Cards for Marco Gonzales in July last year. O’Neill hit better at Triple-A after switching organizations, and has been dominating there this season, earning his first look in the big. So far, it’s gone extremely well, as he’s hit safely in four straight, going 7-for-11 to jack his BA over 80 points up to .309. O’Neill is starting to contribute in the counting cats, and looks like a very nice asset down the stretch now that Pham has been moved.

Quick Hits

  • Few prospects have improved their stock more this year than Jo Adell, who — as we predicted — has made a major move on prospect lists, possibly forcing his way into the top 10 by season’s end.
  • Charlie Morton has a sparking record this year (12-2), but get this — his 2.90 ERA is higher than Jacob DeGrom‘s mark (2.88) just in losses.
  • Salvador Perez‘s slash line numbers are down this year, but after smoking his 19th homer Friday, he’s on pace for a career best in that regard. Where would KC’s pop gun attack be without him?
  • Angels’ 2B prospect Jahmai Jones had a real rough start at Double-A after being promoted three weeks and change ago. He sure has turned things around, going 2-for-5 Friday for his third straight multi-hit effort. Jones is now batting .390 with 10 runs, six walks and two steals over the last 10 games. It’s high time he started getting some Fantasy love.
  • Not surprisingly, Ozzie Albies has slowed down after his ridiculous start. But after middling showings in May and June, he started to heat up again last month and looks poised to get red hot in August. He’s hit safely in three straight (two multi-hit efforts), has driven in runs in all three and flashed extra-base pop with doubles in back-to-back games. Albies is clearly over that hamstring woe he had last week and is ready to finish strong.

Wil Myers: Season in Review

November 21, 2016 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on Wil Myers: Season in Review
One of the most important takeaways from Myers’ season — from a keeper league perspective — is that he only appeared in 10 games in the outfield, likely losing his eligibility in most formats. So going forward he’s only first base eligible.

Hunter Renfroe Ready to Rake

November 1, 2016 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on Hunter Renfroe Ready to Rake
This year, things were quite different as he kicked some ass at Triple-A en route to winning MVP honours in the PCL. Renfroe scored a boatload of runs, flashed fantastic extra-base power and was ridiculously productive. He improved his contact rate and even pitched in with a few swipes.

Jake Thompson Tries to Shake Off Shaky Debut

August 11, 2016 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on Jake Thompson Tries to Shake Off Shaky Debut
He’s armed with a very nice fastball and a solid slider that projects to be even better in time. Thompson’s command, however, could use some work. This young righty projects to throw more strikes as he gains consistency, but there’s going to be some bumps in the road, so it’s hard to envision him as a Fantasy asset in the short term.
