Fantasy Notes: Westbrook Dominates Yanks

July 6, 2006 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on Fantasy Notes: Westbrook Dominates Yanks
Jake Westbrook is getting great support from the Cleveland Indians.
Jake Westbrook has been getting some crazy-ass run support lately.

In today’s column, we look at Jake Westbrook’s run support, some possible roster changes in the Bronx, and Victor Martinez’s hot streak.

  • We’re not big fans of Jake Westbrook, but if he keeps getting run support like this, the wins will come. He was the beneficiary of a 19-run onslaught against the Yankees Wednesday (on George Steinbrenner’s birthday to boot… anyone else find peverse pleasure in that?). Remember a couple of years ago the Indians layed another king-size beating on the Yanks to the tune of 22-0? Yup, that was Westbrook on the hill for that game, too.
  • In the wake of that beat down, Manager Joe Torre has hinted that roster changes are coming down the pike for the Yanks leading up to the break. Pay attention if you own marginal Yankees. The club has discussed the possibility of designating Shawn Chacon, who can’t seem to duplicate last season’s efforts. Apparently, his attitude and work ethic are also under scrutiny. Chacon is scheduled to start Sunday, but look for either Ron Villone or Kris Wilson to get the call instead.
  • Indians’ catcher Victor Martinez has raised his BA 15 points during a current nine-game hitting streak. He’s now got the average above last year’s career-best .305 mark. V-Mart is clearly the best Fantasy baseball catcher not named Joe Mauer.
  • David DeJesus went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts Wednesday to have his 11-game hitting streak snapped. He’s been one of the only bright spots on the woeful Royals this season and his streak is the longest by any member of the team in 2006. DeJesus got his BA up to .331 with the run, and despite being held hitless Wednesday, did manage his 15th RBI of the year. I’d like to see more pop or speed before declaring him much more than a hollow .300 hitter, but the 26-year-old outfielder is definitely on the upswing and is starting to get scooped up in mixed leagues.
  • One day after getting shelled by the Royals (bet you don’t read that sentence often) and blowing the Twins’ 11-game winning streak, starter Boof Bonser was sent down to Triple-A. He lasted just three innings and was burned for four hits, four runs (all earned) and four walks. He also struck out four. Triple-A closer Pat Neshek is expected to get the call to replace Bonser. Given how deep Minnesota’s pen is, don’t look for Neshek to earn any significant opportunities. He’s a right-handed sidearmer with a less-than-picture-perfect delivery. Expect him to be used as a situational righty only.
  • Keep an eye on Jay Payton. He drove in five runs in the three-game set against Detroit (all of them in the first two games) and now has 29 RBI for the year, putting him on pace to almost match last year’s totals. If you’re seeking outfield help, Payton is definitely available in mixed leagues and given that he has slugged 60 points higher in the second half the past three years, he could be a good run producer down the stretch. Consider him a bit of a second-half sleeper.
