The Wire Troll: Teemu Selanne Can Still Do it

February 23, 2014 | by Chris Wassel | Comments (0)
Nick Foligno is a sneaky Fantasy play for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Nick Foligno could reach 45 points if he heats up. (Darkbluejacket.blogspot.com)

If it feels like we have been gone for a few weeks, it is because the NHL version of The Wire Troll has been in a “Sochi slumber.” With the Olympics over, it’s time to look ahead at Week 20 in your Fantasy hockey leagues. Who are the players that could see a bit of a Fantasy boost?

Who are our picks for this week’s edition? Let’s take a look at some players we think can help your Fantasy team.

FORWARDS

Teemu Selanne, RW, Anaheim Ducks: Selanne may be almost 400 years old (okay, okay, so he’s “only” approaching 44), but the Olympics showed that he can still play a bit more of a role than perhaps the Ducks think. Clearly, as the video below shows, he was not ready this season to trade in his hockey stick for a golf club. The energy and leadership Selanne provides cannot be put into words. It may lead to a bit more ice time and more offensive opportunities. Do not expect a major boost in ATOI (Average Time On Ice), but at the very least a slight point and special teams point boost is likely. The next 10-to-14 days will be telling as Selanne adjusts to life back in California.

Nick Foligno, LW, Columbus Blue Jackets: Steadily, Foligno is on pace for perhaps a 45-point season if he goes on a hot streak. His 15-to-20 per cent ownership rates across the board make him a deceptively attractive player on the waiver wire. Columbus could be a hot team after the break and it does have more offensive depth than ever. Even the somewhat favourable schedule helps Foligno owners as we think his grit and hands near the net will be a huge asset in March and particularly April.

Derek Roy, C, St. Louis Blues: Roy has 36 points in 55 games, but has a whopping 16 power play points. The Blues will be lethal going into the final six weeks or so with a top five offensive attack that could get even better at the trade deadline. Some will say Roy’s momentum might be slowed because of the break. We think he will come back well rested. At the very least, he is well preserved and that ice time keeps his ownership rate low. That is good for Fantasy owners that want sneaky value.

DEFENSE

Jason Demers, San Jose Sharks: It is worth noting that Demers is quietly averaging about a point every other game, which is a surprise to most Fantasy owners. We like that he is averaging around three shots over his last seven games. Look, San Jose has enough goal scorers, but if you’re looking for a low risk, moderately solid reward then Demers is a nice defenseman to pick up in leagues in which owners might be sleeping post Olympics.

Eric Gelinas, New Jersey Devils: This is a wait and see pick. Basically if you have a slot available and are willing to wait, then we recommend snatching up Gelinas in a heartbeat. Yes, his defensive skills can leave much to be desired, but his dynamic Power Play abilities are sorely needed in the Swamp. Te Devils are offensively challenged. so Gelinas is someone that can make a difference — yet most have dropped him in Fantasy leagues. Stash and hope!

Please remember that Week 20 is a shortened week with only 38 games on the schedule overall. Just be vigilant and thanks for reading.

Now it’s your turn. Let us know in the comments below who your favourite waiver wire pick of the week is.

The Wire Troll: Gifts Wrapped For 2014

December 29, 2013 | by Chris Wassel | Comments Comments Off on The Wire Troll: Gifts Wrapped For 2014
With the injury count rising to Olympic levels (2010), it really is time to start digging deeper and deeper. Hey, what would you like us to do? This is the reality nearly every Fantasy owner faces. Countless people we talk to lament about how they keep having to drop talent because there are not enough IR or IR+ slots. It is hard to fathom, yet this problem exists.

The Wire Troll: Marcel Goc Over Ankle Woes

March 3, 2013 | by Chris Wassel | Comments Comments Off on The Wire Troll: Marcel Goc Over Ankle Woes
Two multiple-point games in the last week got us thinking that maybe Goc was finally over the ankle injury that had dogged him in the early part of the season. Currently he has just seven points in 15 contests this season but five of those have come in the past three. And with Goc’s ownership under 1 per cent and desperate Fantasy owners in need, he may just be that guy for a team dying for a little production with minimal risk. Please remember that these pickups are the lowest of the low as far as a gamble. One can dump them just as fast as claim them without worry.

The Wire Troll: Tuomo Ruutu Returns to Action

March 11, 2012 | by Chris Wassel | Comments (1)
Ruutu returned to action Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Though you may want to give him a couple games to get back in the swing of things, insert him into your lineup anyway because 17 goals in 57 games translates to a respectable 25 over a 82-game schedule. Ruutu is owned in 25-to-30 per cent of Fantasy hockey leagues, but his shots on goal, hits and point potential is at least a good reason to consider an add. Playoff runs are won on depth guys at this point and the multiple positional eligibility is a huge boost for GMs.
