Video Game Review: Soulcalibur II HD Online

When fans of a series hear “HD re-release,” you can only hope for the best. Will older and simple 3D models and textures tarnish memories of gaming generations gone by? Will it still sound as epic as you remember? The answer to this one is mostly “yes.” Even though these fighters don’t get a full blown redo treatment, they look pretty great. The only thing really standing out as dated are some various hair and fabric physics.

Video Game Review: DmC: Devil May Cry

Also new to the series is a grappling hook type ability that can pull Dante toward enemies or specific targets when in Angel Mode. Using it in Devil Mode yanks the enemies toward you or can pull heavy obstacles to clear the path. It’s a neat dynamic to the controls as it adds more exploration and secret area potential that has been commonplace in the series. Oh, not to mention it puts one helluva extra gear into the combo engine.

Video Game Review: Of Orcs and Men

As you’re breaking backs and showering daggers into your foes, you’ll be escorting your heroes from locale to locale, occasionally stumbling across a treasure and taking control of whichever character suits the situation. For example, small and tight areas may require Styx’s size and stealth for infiltration. However, the game never truly opens up, which makes it always feels like you’re traversing through corridors, making exploration overly dull and linear for an RPG.

Video Game Review: Dance Central 3

If you’ve played either of the previous titles, you know the drill. A song starts playing, a dancer starts dancing and you mirror their moves as closely as you can. A series of cue cards will cycle through to hint on which dance move to perform next; the higher the difficulty setting, the faster and more complex the dance moves get. As you nail each maneuver you’ll rack up points based on how accurately you perform them and how many you hit in a row. Busting a groove in your living room alone is sooo June 2010, so you know this game supports two dancers at a time like it should.

Video Game Review: New Little King’s Story

Intuitive and enjoyable as it is, there are some issues when interacting with NPCs and environments. As your kingdom flourishes, the citizen count increases, and when trying to recruit specific people from a mob, it gets messy — most times you’ll end up picking somebody you don’t want. This wouldn’t be a problem if you had more control over your lineup. Pressing “triangle” does a quick roll call to cycle through your followers’ job classes, but it would’ve been nice to point and dismiss a member as easily as you recruited them.

Video Game Review: One Piece: Pirate Warriors

As you progress through the main story and take control of other shipmates, you’ll be able to go back and replay past chapters with your choice of character in “Another Log” mode. Plus, take the fight online in a co-op mode where you conquer territories along with fellow pirates. Whichever way you choose to play, you’ll always be able to earn special collectors coins for your troubles, marked with the game’s characters, pirate flags and other artwork. These coins can be equipped in slots that you acquire when leveling up — match up the correct set of coins and you’ll be rewarded with special attributes and power ups.

Video Game Review: Jet Set Radio

This game has you controlling a crew of rebellious graffiti artists known as “rudies” with the sole purpose of tagging up the streets to express disdain against global corporations (probably). Gliding around on jet skates, you can roll, jump and grind just about anywhere within the confines of each stage’s map. If there’s a pole, fence, staircase or almost any surface with a hard edge, simply press the jump button, aim your character to the desired surface and they’ll be shredding the distance the moment they land. While grinding, you can jump from surface to surface to build momentum and speed as well as stack up points. Pressing the right trigger in short bursts will give an extra boost of speed and trick out your jumps and grinds with style.
