The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays continue to hold the top two spots as they have since June, however, the Minnesota Twins and new leader of the NL East, Philadelphia Phillies, continue to climb up to chase for the top two spots.

The Tampa Bay Rays are still atop the standings, but who knows for how long. The season-long battle between division the Rays and division rival New York seems like it will continue until October.

The Rays have finally reclaimed the top spot from the Yankees for the first time since the week of June 14. New York had held the top spot for two solid months until splitting series with the Royals, Rangers, and Red Sox. With the Rays winning their fifth straight on Wednesday, a run which includes a sweep of the Texas Rangers, they have proved they deserve to be the top dog.

After a couple week’s absence of the Power Rankings we’re back, and the most surprising team is the Toronto Blue Jays with 59 wins, enough to be a contender in other divisions, but in baseball’s best division, the Jays sit 10 games back in the AL East, trailing the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox. Another surprise is that the race for the NL Central between the Cardinals and the Reds is still so close. I expected the Cardinals to take a bigger lead after the All-Star break, but it seems as if the Reds deserve more credit than they were given as they are showing no signs of packing it in.

It sure looks like the Yankees are almost as unstoppable as they were in the playoffs last year. But with the Rays only 2.5 games back, the Pinstripers will have to keep playing hard and winning if they want to surpass them in the playoffs.
