Podcast: Chicks Dig the Long Ball

April 11, 2014 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on Podcast: Chicks Dig the Long Ball
Jonathan Villar crushed a dinger for the Houston Astros.
Jonathan Villar hit a mammoth shot on Thursday.

RotoRob Fantasy Baseball Weekly Podcast, heard every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST, was back again this week, this time featuring the long-time MIA Tim McLeod, RotoRob.com MLB Editor. Naturally, BTR was its usual uncooperative self to begin the show, but once we shook off that shaky opening, we rocked the airwaves.

Among the topics we broached:

  • Yet another cursed RotoRob-Tim BTR moment to kick the show off.
  • On the plus side, with BTR’s guest lines getting screwed up, we didn’t have any crank callers this week. No Jimmy from New Jersey? What a shame.
  • Starlin Castro is suddenly on a hitting rampage.
  • We bemoan the slew of injuries to major players already with the anticipation of many more to come.
  • Josh Hamilton looked like he was more than all the way back through the first eight games of the season.
  • Kole Calhoun has job security for the next couple of months, albeit, in a weaker lineup in which he may not be driven in as often as normal.
  • Matt Moore didn’t look good early on, and now we know why.
  • Will David Price be dealt given his contract situation?
  • We discuss Bud Selig’s latest bonehead move to help mar the 40th anniversary of Hank Aaron’s record breaking blast.
  • Tim reminds of us Babe Ruth’s well-known history with drinking.
  • Dan Straily has looked really good so far, emerging as a must-own Fantasy asset.
  • Ian Desmond has his power game going, but so far, where’s the speed?
  • RotoRob slaps himself for setting Tim up for a slam-dunk pun.
  • We provide advice to those looking to spend money chasing saves.
  • We both really like what we’ve seen out of Anthony Rendon so far this season.
  • Tim won’t be surprised if Pedro Alvarez smokes 40-to-45 dingers this year.
  • RotoRob is already throwing the Mets’ promises of being a 90-win team back in their faces.

The Wire Troll: The Return of the Closer Carousel

April 6, 2014 | by Tim McLeod | Comments (4)
He built on that strong performance with a great spring and surprised many by claiming a spot in the Jay’s rotation out of Spring Training. In his debut Tuesday against the Rays he pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings with four punchouts. Hutchison’s Tommy John surgery is now well in the rear-view mirror so cough up a few of those FAAB dollars and enjoy the ride.

2014 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Outfield Rankings

If not for injuries, CarGo looked to be on pace for year similar to 2010 when he finished third in the NL MVP race. Injuries have always seemed to plague Gonzalez since being traded to the Rockies in 2008. During his tenure with Colorado, he has only managed to play in over 140 games once (2010) which isn’t very good when you consider you’ll likely have to use a first or second round pick on him. Gonzalez possesses all the talent in the world. He has the ability to hit for a high average, hit for power, steal a fair amount of bases, and drive in a ton of runs. Gonzalez is entering the prime of his career. He’s a 30-30 candidate… if he’s able to stay healthy.

2014 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Top 10 Sleepers

March 28, 2014 | by RotoRob | Comments Comments Off on 2014 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Top 10 Sleepers
Is there such a thing as a sleeper in the age of instant information? We don’t know if sleepers is the right terminology, so let’s try “undervalued.” A lot of the players listed below are known, but their potential upside — and return on the investment — could be sky-high.

2014 RotoRob MLB Draft Kit: Third Base Rankings

March 5, 2014 | by RotoRob | Comments (1)
Still, the normally injury prone player was able to set a career high by playing in 160 games. That’s the good news. The bad news is his overall work at the plate regressed. Longoria’s walk rate dipped for the second straight season and he never runs anymore. This former college star has enjoyed a fine career to date, but you can’t shake the feeling that he hasn’t had that true breakthrough yet. Is a 40-homer season coming one of these years? Well, he’ll need to stop the two-year trend of regressing extra-base pop first. Longoria is a no-nonsense player that will do whatever he can to be the best. Is 2014 the season he finally puts it all together?
