The Wire Troll: Jump on the Adam Henrique Bandwagon

November 6, 2011 | by Chris Wassel | Comments (1)
Adam Henrique is a player on the rise for the New Jersey Devils.
Adam Henrique needs to be grabbed now that he’s on the Devils’ top line.

Now is the winter of our discontent. Okay, so that’s not really the case, Fantasy hockey fans. November comes first and usually the Fantasy rain falls before Old Man Winter truly arrives. The cold reality of those October hot streaks fade and “Fantasy corrections” slowly start to appear in most cases. Sure, there are many exceptions but there are more rules. In our weekly column on The Hockey Writers, we take a more digest-like approach, but with The Wire Troll, we have the luxury of digging around the waiver wires with a little more liberty.

At this time, whether you are struggling in your leagues or are just trying to shore up some holes in the roster, the waiver wire is more plentiful than ever. There are so many fine choices and yet all we can give you is our five best picks. Keep in mind there is that standard assurance that all of our players are owned in less than half of the Fantasy leagues out there. Also, some are available in fewer than 10 per cent of leagues.

This is a quick way to do it, so let’s get down to business before everyone picks up on these intriguing waiver wire options.

Adam Henrique, C, New Jersey Devils: We have been telling people to watch out for this guy for some time. On Saturday against Winnipeg, he showed the reasons for our accolades once again with two goals, including the winner in overtime. Henrique is owned in fewer than 10 per cent of all leagues, but that is not going to last. Last week in ESPN leagues, Henrique was owned by virtually no one (ESPN’s dreaded 0 number). Act now as he will be centering Jersey’s top line for weeks and — who knows — maybe the rest of the season.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard, RW, Minnesota Wild: PMB has been effective with assists and really this is a move only for those desperate for that particular category. While he is only getting second line time, Bouchard just has a knack for setting up players (don’t forget that he had 50 assists in 2007-08). Last week, he had a goal and two assists and clearly is finally over the concussion and hamstring issues that have lingered over the past two seasons. Bouchard’s ownership is very low and well below 20 per cent in most leagues, so it may be time to snatch him up if you’re desperate enough for offense. Do not expect much in the way of hits, blocks, or shots on goal, however.

David Schlemko, D, Phoenix Coyotes: Hey, we search far and wide on the waiver wire for the sneakiest in snipes, if you will. Schlemko’s six points in 11 games is impressive enough, but his double digit shots, blocks, and hits are definitely a bonus for Fantasy owners looking far and wide for category integrity. This is a player that can be claimed, considering how few even realize that he is a pretty viable option given his versatility. Schlemko literally is owned in less than 5 per cent of leagues.

Kyle Wellwood, C, Winnipeg Jets: Again, this is another one of those “points only” acquisitions. Hits and blocked shots are not really in Wellwood’s vocabulary. In 13 games, he has five goals, four assists and a propensity for being in the right place at the right time. With a few injuries in Winnipeg, Wellwood has found himself in some PP situations and second line playing time more and more. Going forward, he is Fantasy viable, but again only from a pure offensive standpoint. His ATOI is under 14:00 which means you will need surrounding players with higher ATOI. Ownership rates are low so Wellwood should be on the wire somewhere.

Lars Eller, C, Montreal Canadiens: Eller is a bit more of a risk, but sometimes in life, you have to play to win the game. That is why we take one gamble a week on a player way down the list that is definitely out there for the taking. Eller has points in two of his last three games and has seen more and more ice time for the Habs (almost four minutes more than last season). He nearly scored twice against the Rangers Saturday and his potential is starting to rise to the surface. If you can stash Eller on your bench, he may just be worth the add considering he is only owned in less than 5 per cent of all leagues.

Again, we wish you the best of luck in your leagues. Remember, no question is too big or too small so bring the heat to us and we will guide you to Fantasy glory. Thanks again for reading.

Ice Chips: Category Boosters

February 6, 2009 | by Mike Chen | Comments (2)
We promise not to go on any Christian Bale-type rants when we dispense hockey advice. While the NHL trade deadline is just under a month away, fantasy leagues all over are getting to the point where rosters have to be frozen. If you find you’re lacking in a specific category, we’re here to help — […]
